This powder room was perfectly functional and “fine”, so had remained untouched for the several years the homeowners have lived in this house. However, it was sorely outdated, dark, and not in keeping with the current style of the home and its current residents, so it was time for a makeover.

This project was very exciting to me, as I had total leeway to do as I wanted in the two days the homeowners were away - getting into a space on my own and starting the “demo” process (just existing trim and fixtures in this case) is how I love to get my creative juices flowing. I quickly knocked out some work and let the details of the re-design take shape. I didn’t make my initial personal goal of having the room completely finished in those two days, as a shipping delay and the decision to create a built in storage shelf, rather than rehang the old cabinet (after getting going, I just couldn’t put this purely functional particle board cabinet back up, but knew they needed somewhere to stash some extra toilet paper!) made it a two and a half day job, but it was pretty darn close and the extra time was worth the “big reveal”.

New lighting, replacing the old fixtures, and a built in storage shelf completed the look.

We decided to brighten up the space and give this small powder room, located right in the heart of the home a casual feel, but with some upscale touches. In my planning stages, which involve a lot of me browsing Pinterest and scribbling ideas down, I decided to play with some art that I wanted to incorporate to bring a glamorous touch to the otherwise neutral space.

I immediately envisioned a small gallery wall of glam artwork; square, glossy black frames with a large mat and small dramatic, metallic art. Do you know how hard it is to find just the right pieces when you have such a specific vision? It’s hard. S…

I immediately envisioned a small gallery wall of glam artwork; square, glossy black frames with a large mat and small dramatic, metallic art. Do you know how hard it is to find just the right pieces when you have such a specific vision? It’s hard. So I sat down and created some custom artwork to hang, and the rest of the ideas took shape while I worked. Sometimes that one piece is what sets the design in motion and I can make all of the other little decisions around the one perfect starting point.

Textured, neutral wallpaper in soft greys gives some interest in depth, and was the perfect compliment to the clean lines of this board and batten trim in a bright white. Board and batten is a great way to create a simple luxury look that can transform a powder room, dining room, entryway, hallway, and relatively simple to install.

Now THIS is a powder room that works. It’s lovely, inviting, clean and modern. Such a fun transformation!
